Aspect ratio is just the shape of the image: the width compared to the height. 16:9 is a wide rectangle. 1:1 is a square. 4:5 is a tall portrait.

Every platform wants a different shape. Instagram posts like 4:5. YouTube thumbnails are 16:9. Profile pictures get crammed into circles. Cropping to the right ratio before you upload is the difference between your image and the platform's butchered version of it.

Know the target shape first

This sounds obvious, but most bad crops happen because someone cropped blind. Look up the ratio you need before you touch anything.

Common ones I use constantly: 1:1 for profile pictures and grid posts, 4:5 for Instagram portraits, 16:9 for video thumbnails and headers, 3:2 for classic photo prints.

Crop, don't stretch

When you change an image's shape, you have two options: cut parts off (crop) or squish it (stretch). Always crop. Never stretch. Stretched faces look wrong in a way everyone notices but nobody can name.

Cropping means choosing what to lose. That's the actual skill. Keep the subject, lose the empty sky, the extra floor, the blurry stranger at the edge.

The rule of thirds is a suggestion, not a law

Photographers love the grid. For cropping, the useful version is simpler: don't center everything by default. Shifting the subject slightly off-center usually looks more natural.

But rules are made for breaking when you know why. A centered subject with symmetry around it (a building, a face straight-on) looks deliberate and strong. Trust your eyes over the grid.

Leave breathing room

Don't crop tight against the subject. Platforms add their own crops on top of yours: circles for avatars, rounded corners, safe-area trims. A little margin around the important parts survives all of it.

I leave about 10 percent padding around faces and text. It's saved me from decapitated profile pictures more than once.

Practical tip: crop a copy, not the original. Save the cropped version as a new file. The day you need the full image back (different platform, different ratio), you'll be glad the original is untouched.
