HEIC to PNG converter: the free way that actually works

Your iPhone saves photos as HEIC. That's great for your storage. It's terrible for everything else.

About 42,000 searches a month in the US are people trying to turn HEIC files into PNG. Usually because they need transparency, or because some uploader accepts PNG but chokes on HEIC.

Why PNG and not JPG

JPG is the more common conversion, and I wrote about that already. PNG is the one you want when your HEIC file has transparency, or when you need every pixel exact.

The catch: iPhone photos don't usually have transparency. HEIC from a phone camera is a plain photo. So ask yourself what you actually need. If it's just compatibility, JPG gives you a smaller file. If it's pixel-exact quality or transparency from an edited file, PNG is the answer.

The free way

You don't need to install anything. Apple's own Photos app can export as PNG, but that's slow if you have more than a couple of files, and on Windows you're stuck without extra software.

The fast route: open Jiggle X Wiggle's free image to PNG converter in your browser, drop in the HEIC file, download the PNG. No account, no watermark, no install. It works on phones too, which matters because the HEIC file is usually sitting on your phone in the first place.

What to watch for

HEIC files carry HDR data on newer iPhones. PNG can't hold HDR, so that extra color information gets flattened to standard range on conversion. For normal photos you'll never notice. If you shot something specifically for HDR, keep the HEIC original.

File size jumps too. A 2 MB HEIC becomes a 6-8 MB PNG easily. That's normal. PNG doesn't compress photos as efficiently.

On a Mac, Preview opens HEIC natively and exports PNG in two clicks. The browser route is the faster one when you're on Windows or your phone.

Practical tip: convert only the photos you need, not your whole camera roll. HEIC is a genuinely good storage format. Keep your library in HEIC and convert the handful of files that need to leave Apple's world.
