Pandora changed again in December 2025. Avatar: Fire and Ash opened in the United States on December 19, 2025, after a world premiere at Dolby Theatre on December 1. James Cameron directs. The film runs 197 minutes, close to three hours and 17 minutes. It is long, loud, and full of fire.
Sam Worthington returns as Jake Sully. Zoe Saldana returns as Neytiri. Their family is still grieving Neteyam, their eldest son, who died in The Way of Water. That grief drives this film. Cameron said fire stands for anger and violence. Ash stands for grief and loss. You feel both in almost every scene.

A new clan, hardened by loss

The film introduces the Mangkwan, known as the Ash People. Oona Chaplin plays Varang, their leader. Her clan lost its home to a volcano. That loss hardened them. They turned away from Eywa, the great mother spirit of Pandora. They now fight for survival with no soft edges.
Varang is not a simple villain. Cameron said she will do anything for her people, even things you would call evil. That line matters. She raids, she burns, and she makes deals with humans. She also protects her clan with total focus. You may hate her methods, but you can see why her people follow her.
The Sully family meets the Ash People on a trip with the Wind Traders. The convoy carries Spider, the human teen adopted by Jake and Neytiri, played by Jack Champion. Spider cannot breathe Pandora's air for long without help. The family wants him safe. The Ash People attack the convoy, loot it, and scatter the family. That attack sets the whole film in motion.

Spider changes the story

Spider is the film's hinge. His mask fails during sleep. Jake and Neytiri must get him to human scientists fast. On the way, Kiri, played by Sigourney Weaver, saves him in a new way. She infuses his body with mycelia, a living network that lets him breathe Pandora's air. That gift changes Spider. It also changes what humans can learn from Pandora.
Human scientists see a prize in that gift. If they can copy it, more humans could live on Pandora without masks. That idea scares Jake. He knows what humans do with prizes on Pandora. They take them. That fear drives a hard choice late in the film, when Jake almost kills Spider to keep the secret safe. He cannot do it. He hugs him instead. That beat is the film's heart.
Kiri also grows here. She learns she was born from Eywa. She struggles to connect with Eywa at first. By the end, she calls on Pandora's wildlife to save the Tulkun and the Na'vi. Weaver plays Kiri with a mix of wonder and pain. She is a teen with a godlike link, and she does not know what to do with it.

Quaritch, Varang, and a dangerous deal

Stephen Lang returns as Colonel Miles Quaritch, now a Na'vi recombinant. He was killed by Neytiri, then brought back in a new body. He still hunts Jake. He still wants Spider. In this film, he makes a deal with Varang. He teaches her clan to use guns and flamethrowers. He also starts a close bond with her.
That deal is the film's most troubling turn. A human soldier arms a Na'vi clan against other Na'vi. The RDA, the human mining company, also returns in force. Its hunters target the Tulkun, the whale-like creatures the Metkayina revere. Jake must rally the clans to stop a massacre.
Kate Winslet returns as Ronal, the Metkayina matriarch. She is pregnant through much of the film. She dies in childbirth during the battle, after Neytiri helps deliver her baby daughter Pril. That death hits hard. It shows the cost of war on families and soldiers alike.

A battle built on water, fire, and family

The final battle mixes sea, sky, and fire. The Tulkun and Na'vi ambush the RDA fleet. Quaritch and the Mangkwan turn the tide. Neytiri is captured. Jake surrenders to save bloodshed, then escapes with help. Kiri finally links with Eywa. Pandora's wildlife answers her call.
Jake and Quaritch fight on a floating rock in a magnetic flux. Spider falls. Both men work together to save him. Quaritch then throws himself off the rock. That end is ambiguous. It leaves his fate open, but it also closes his hunt for now.

The numbers behind the spectacle

The film cost $350-400 million to make. It earned $1.49 billion worldwide. That total made it the third-highest-grossing film of 2025. It was also the lowest-grossing film in the Avatar series so far. That fact tells you how high Cameron set the bar. A $1.49 billion film can still feel like a step down for Avatar.
Critics gave it mixed to positive reviews. Many praised the visual effects, the action, and the spectacle. Many faulted the runtime and the script. The film won visual effects awards at the 98th Academy Awards and the 79th British Academy Film Awards. It also made top ten lists from the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review for 2025.
The film reached digital purchase and rental on March 31, 2026. It streams on Disney Plus from June 23, 2026. You can watch it at home now, but the big screen still suits it best. The fire, the water, and the flying scenes were built for a large format.

What comes next on Pandora

Two more films are scheduled, based on Disney dates reported as of March 20, 2026. Avatar 4 is set for December 21, 2029. Avatar 5 is set for December 19, 2031. Those dates are far off. They give Cameron time to shape the next chapters.
Unconfirmed or reported, not stated as confirmed fact: the 2029 and 2031 dates for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are scheduled dates from Disney reporting that can still shift, and any plot details for those films are not confirmed.
