Lokesh told interviewers that he and Rajinikanth are in talks about another film. He also said it will not be Coolie 2.0. It will be a new story, with original characters and a distinct narrative, if it happens at all.
That distinction matters. Fans want a sequel to Coolie, which released on August 14, 2025. Lokesh wants a fresh film with the same star. Those are two different projects, and only the fresh film has his backing in interviews.
What Lokesh actually said
Lokesh spoke to Gobinath about a possible reunion. He said Rajini sir and he are in talks, and if they collaborate again, it will be something unique. He even talked about creating a universe together, but he stressed that Coolie itself was a standalone film.
He repeated that point in other interviews. Coolie is not part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, which links Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo. Lokesh clarified that before release, in a social post thanking the cast and crew. Coolie was made for Rajinikanth alone, and its story ends there.
After Coolie, Lokesh said both men were eager to work together again. He said Rajinikanth, after watching the film, expressed the idea that they should work together again. He also said they do not know the timeline yet.
That is a warm signal, not a launch. No title, no producer, and no start date has been announced for a new Rajinikanth and Lokesh film. Any poster you see for Coolie 2 is fan made until the makers say otherwise.
The other side of the talk
Not every report is positive. TrackTollywood reported buzz that Rajinikanth was not impressed with new scripts from Lokesh, and that Lokesh is now returning to Kaithi 2. That report is unconfirmed, and it clashes with Lokesh's own warm comments.
You should hold both reports in mind. Directors and stars talk, scripts are pitched, and some pitches do not land. A star can like a director and still pass on a script. That is normal, and it does not mean a door is closed for good.
Other reports went further. Pinkvilla reported talk of Lokesh bringing Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan together after 40 years for a gangster film. That project was also unconfirmed, with talks described as advanced but no official announcement.
The pattern is clear. Lokesh has many ideas, and trade press reports many of them. Only an official announcement from a production house turns an idea into a film. Until then, treat each report as a lead, not a launch.
Why Jailer 2 changed the picture
Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, released on October 15, 2026. It stars Rajinikanth as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, with Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa, and Rithvik returning, plus SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Vidya Balan.
The film crossed Rs 500 crore in India gross within 15 days, per Economic Times, and its worldwide gross reached Rs 765.15 crore in the same period. It passed Coolie, which finished at Rs 493.48 crore worldwide, with Rs 271.50 crore domestic net.
That success gives Rajinikanth a strong base for his next choice. He does not need to rush into a sequel. He can pick a fresh story, a proven director, or a new pairing, and the market will still show up.
Jailer 2 also beat Jana Nayagan to become the biggest Tamil opener of the year in some counts, with nearly Rs 60 crore on day one. That is a useful context for Rajinikanth's next film, because it shows his pull is still growing, even at 75.
What Rajinikanth's next film could be
Three paths are open. One, a fresh Lokesh film with a new story. Two, another sequel or franchise film with a director he trusts. Three, a completely new pairing that has not been reported yet.
Lokesh's own queue adds a clue. He is expected to direct Kaithi 2, and he is also linked to Vikram 2. Those films will take time, which means any Rajinikanth reunion may wait until after Kaithi 2.
For fans, the smart move is to watch for an official announcement, not a rumour. A production house post, a title video, or a pooja ceremony photo will tell you more than a month of trade buzz.
Rajinikanth has earned the right to choose slowly. Coolie gave him a mass hit. Jailer 2 gave him a bigger one. His next film should be judged on its script, not on whether it carries the Coolie name.
Unconfirmed or reported, not stated as confirmed fact: No Coolie 2 has been confirmed. Reports that Rajinikanth declined Lokesh scripts, and reports of a Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan film, are unconfirmed. Any new Rajinikanth and Lokesh film remains in talks, with no title or date confirmed.
