That little icon in the browser tab is called a favicon. It's tiny, but a missing or blurry one makes a site look unfinished. If you've got a logo as a PNG, turning it into a favicon.ico takes about a minute.

What an ICO file actually is

An ICO isn't a picture format like PNG or JPG. It's a container. One .ico file holds the same icon at several sizes: 16 by 16 for the browser tab, 32 for the taskbar, 48 for desktop shortcuts, sometimes 256 for high-res displays.

The system picks the size it needs. That's why a single ICO file looks sharp everywhere instead of getting stretched.

A PNG is one image at one size. Browsers accept PNG favicons, but the ICO container is still the safest, most compatible choice.

Start with a big, square PNG

Your source image matters more than the conversion. Start with a PNG at least 512 by 512 pixels, square.

Favicons display as squares or circles cropped from squares. A wide logo gets squished into the square and becomes unreadable. Make a square version of your logo first, with about 10 percent padding around it. Phones crop icons into circles, and tight edges get clipped.

Simple logos win. At 16 pixels, fine detail turns to mush. If your full logo is complex, use a simplified version or just the first letter. Test it at 16 pixels before you commit.

Keep the transparency

If your PNG has a transparent background, keep it through the conversion. A transparent icon floats cleanly on any browser theme . A white box behind your logo looks broken on dark mode.

Modern ICO files preserve transparency. Just make sure your converter doesn't flatten the background. If it offers a background color option, leave it transparent.

The conversion

Upload your square PNG to a PNG-to-ICO converter. Jiggle X Wiggle's free converter handles this in seconds, right in the browser.

Pick the sizes to include: 16, 32, 48, and 256 covers everything. Download the .ico file. Done.

Putting it on your site

Save the file as favicon.ico in your website's root folder. Most browsers check there automatically, no code needed.

For full coverage, add the 180-pixel PNG for Apple touch icons and 192 and 512-pixel PNGs for Android. Then hard-refresh your site and look at the tab. Browsers cache favicons aggressively, so check in a private window if the old one sticks.

The mistakes to avoid

Converting a tiny PNG. A 100-pixel logo converted to ICO is just a bigger file of a blurry image. Start big.

Forgetting to check it small. Your icon lives at 16 pixels. If you can't read it there, simplify.

Skipping the file entirely. No favicon means the browser shows a default blank icon. It takes a minute to fix, and every visitor sees it.

One square PNG in, one crisp favicon out.
