You have a logo on a white box. You want the logo floating clean on your website. The white box has to go.

That's background removal, and it's the reason transparent PNGs exist. A PNG can store "nothing here" as a real pixel value. JPG can't. The background isn't hidden, it's genuinely absent.

The quick version

Upload your image to a background removal tool, download the PNG with transparency, done. For simple cases (a product on a white background, a logo on solid color), the automatic tools nail it in seconds.

I've removed hundreds of backgrounds this way. White and solid backgrounds are easy. The tools earn their keep there.

Where it gets tricky

Hair. Fur. Anything wispy. Automatic removal turns hair into a crunchy halo or chops it off entirely.

Glass and translucent objects are the other hard case. The tool has to guess what's background showing through versus the object itself, and it guesses wrong in interesting ways.

For tricky images, do the automatic pass first, then zoom in and clean the edges by hand in any photo editor. The eraser brush at low hardness, run along the problem edges. Ten minutes of cleanup beats an hour of starting from scratch.

The format rules

Save the result as PNG, always. If you save as JPG, the transparency gets filled with a solid color (usually white or black) and you're back where you started. This is the most common mistake in the whole process.

Also: don't re-save a transparent PNG as a PNG ten times. PNG is lossless, so repeated saves don't degrade it. But every trip through some random online tool risks the tool flattening the transparency without telling you. Keep a master copy.

Checking your work

Open the PNG over a colored background (any editor, or even a slide deck). If you see fringes of the old background color around the edges, that's leftover halo. Zoom in and erase it.

Practical tip: after removing a white background, run a "defringe" or "remove white matte" pass if your editor has one. It strips the pale outline that automatic tools leave behind, and it's the difference between amateur and clean.

After the background is gone

If you need the image in another format later, Jiggle X Wiggle's free converter handles PNG conversions in seconds. Just remember: converting a transparent PNG to JPG kills the transparency. Keep the PNG as your master.
