The record book Ramayana is chasing
Ramayana opened in cinemas today, November 5, and trade is already talking about records. The film has the biggest presales of a pre-Diwali release, a reported Rs 4000 crore budget across both parts, and a five language release built for a record opening. But the numbers at the top are far above what even the most hopeful trade voices predict for day one.
Here is the honest frame. Day 1 figures are already coming in, and they are live estimates, not a final total. Per Sacnilk, the morning snapshot at 8am was Rs 5.44 crore net in India, Rs 6.42 crore gross, from 2,900 plus shows. By 12:03 PM IST the live estimate had risen to Rs 17.10 crore net in India, Rs 20.18 crore gross, from 9,249 shows, with Hindi at Rs 12.55 crore, Kannada at Rs 2.18 crore, Telugu at Rs 1.53 crore, Tamil at Rs 57 lakh and Malayalam at Rs 27 lakh. The final Day 1 total comes tonight. Every prediction attached to Ramayana in this article is trade opinion, not a result. The benchmark figures for older films are real collections from box office trackers.
The list below uses India gross on day one, as ranked by Pinkvilla, and worldwide day one gross as reported by Sacnilk. Trackers count differently, so small gaps between lists are normal, but the order at the top does not change.
The day one India top five
The biggest day one India opening ever belongs to Pushpa 2: The Rule. Allu Arjun film, released December 5, 2024, grossed Rs 191 crore in India on day one, per Pinkvilla. Sacnilk puts its day one India net at Rs 164.25 crore, with a worldwide day one gross of Rs 275.01 crore.
Second is Dhurandhar: The Revenge, the Ranveer Singh film that released March 19, 2026, with a day one India gross of Rs 138 crore per Pinkvilla. It also collected Rs 100 crore in a single day during its opening weekend, and trade has named breaking that single day mark as Ramayana first target for the post-Diwali holiday on November 9.
Third is Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, with Rs 133 crore gross in India on day one in 2017, and Rs 217 crore worldwide. Fourth is RRR, with Rs 131 crore in India and Rs 223 crore worldwide. Fifth is KGF Chapter 2, with Rs 127.50 crore in India and Rs 159 crore worldwide. Yash, who plays Ravana in Ramayana, already owns that fifth spot as the star of KGF 2. Even Jawan sits ninth at Rs 90 crore in India, with about Rs 129 crore worldwide.
Five films sit above Rs 127 crore on day one in India, and every one was a sequel, a franchise climax, or a star vehicle with years of build up behind it. Ramayana is a first part, not a sequel, and it opens on a working Thursday before Diwali, not on a holiday.
What trade actually predicts for Ramayana
Trade predictions for Ramayana day one fall into two camps. Bollywood Hungama trade piece from November 4 says trade expects Rs 60 to 70 crore in Hindi and Rs 100 crore in all languages. That would put Ramayana just inside the all-time top five on day one in India.
The hopeful camp goes higher. Ramesh Bala expects Rs 100 to 150 crore in India on day one. Trade analyst Akkshay Rathie expects Rs 100 to 125 crore across all languages. News18 reported expectations of a Rs 150 crore opening. Toxic itself opened to Rs 117 crore in India, the sixth biggest opening ever.
The cautious camp goes lower. Girish Johar expects about Rs 50 crore in India on day one, with Rs 250 crore over the opening weekend, and points out that the major business will begin from Diwali on Sunday onwards. Raj Bansal expects Rs 60 crore plus on opening, and Rs 100 crore by November 9 or 10. The spread from Rs 50 crore to Rs 150 crore tells you how much depends on spot bookings and the Diwali weekend itself.
The Rs 2000 crore lifetime talk, explained honestly
Beyond day one, trade is talking about a far bigger number. Bollywood Hungama reported that trade feels Ramayana can collect Rs 2000 crore in its lifetime, and said the film is in sync with the current mood in India. That is trade opinion, not a forecast with a model behind it, and it should be read as excitement, not as a promise.
For scale, here is what a Rs 2000 crore lifetime would mean. Pushpa 2 finished with about Rs 1742.10 crore gross worldwide, per Sacnilk figures. Baahubali 2 finished near Rs 1788.06 crore worldwide. RRR finished near Rs 1230 crore, and KGF Chapter 2 near Rs 1215 crore. No Indian film has ever crossed Rs 2000 crore worldwide in its lifetime, on the figures these trackers report. Dhurandhar: The Revenge is reported at about Rs 1813.39 crore worldwide in the same ranking, which would make it the highest lifetime grosser of all.
A Rs 2000 crore lifetime would need Ramayana to do more than open big. It would need repeat viewing, a long run through November, strong overseas business in the face of Godzilla Minus Zero, and a second wave of family audiences after Diwali. Possible, but it is a bet on word of mouth over weeks, not on a single day of presales.
Which records are actually in reach
So which records can Ramayana realistically break? The most likely is the pre-Diwali opener record. Taran Adarsh, who watched the film twice, said it would be the "highest pre-Diwali opener of all time", and a Rs 100 crore all languages opening would almost certainly take it.
Next is the biggest opening for a Hindi film that is not a sequel. Toxic, at Rs 117 crore, holds a strong recent mark for a non-franchise opener. Then comes the Dhurandhar single day Rs 100 crore feat, which trade has named as Ramayana first target for the post-Diwali holiday on November 9.
The all-time day one record of Rs 191 crore in India, and the worldwide day one record of Rs 275.01 crore, look out of reach on a pre-Diwali Thursday, even on the highest predictions. They are not impossible, but no trade voice in the reporting read for this article predicts them. Watch the first weekend, watch November 9, and watch the second week. That is where Ramayana will write its line in the record book, or fall short of it.
What the trade is saying
Taran Adarsh, who watched the film twice, is the most bullish voice in trade. Writing on X, as quoted by News18, he said:
"Sky is the limit. There is no stopping this film. It has grandeur and soul. I am very confident Ramayana will do well. It will shatter all records. More screens are being added as we speak."
