Two novels, one relentless season
Slow Horses Season 6 premiered September 16, 2026 on Apple TV, with new episodes weekly through October 21, 2026, six episodes in total. For the first time, the show folded two Mick Herron novels into one season, Joe Country and Slough House, the sixth and seventh books in the Slough House series, adapted by Gaby Chiappe and directed by Adam Randall.
That doubling is a big swing, because past seasons adapted one book each, with room to breathe. Season 6 moves faster, with longer episodes in places, and a plot that keeps raising the stakes. A hit squad arrives to kill everyone connected with Slough House, and the season never really lets up after that.
Apple's official logline says Season 6 sees the Slow Horses on the run as Diana Taverner embroils them all in a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge. That logline is accurate, but it understates how personal the season gets, especially for River Cartwright, whose family history drives much of the action.
Lamb, Taverner, River, and the team
Gary Oldman returns as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant, flatulent, deliberately repellent head of Slough House, the department where failed spies are sent to rot. Oldman's performance remains the show's centre, because Lamb is both the joke and the genius, a man who runs his failures like a landlord runs a condemned building, yet always seems three steps ahead.
Kristin Scott Thomas returns as Diana Taverner, Lamb's cold, sly foil at the Park, with Jack Lowden as River, Saskia Reeves, Christopher Chung, Rosalind Eleazar, and Jonathan Pryce around them. Hugo Weaving joins the ensemble, and Lenny Rush joins in an undisclosed role, which kept fans guessing through the early episodes.
The episode titles tell the arc in miniature, Circle of Life on September 16, Daddy Issues, Resurrection, Lost and Found, Sayonara, and Judgment Day on October 21. That final title is not just a flourish. The safe house becomes unsafe, Lamb and Taverner finally join forces, and the season closes on a confrontation that had been building since the first episode.
Why the two-book gamble paid off
Critics praised Season 6 as more dangerous and more dour than Season 5, with sharp writing, convoluted plotting, and an Oldman performance so abrasive only he gets away with it. Rotten Tomatoes coverage called it compelling, with a dry-as-London-gin sense of humour, which is about as perfect a description of Slow Horses as you will find.
The show's genius is stripping glamour from spy fiction. There are no casinos, no gadgets, no glamorous tradecraft montages. There are damp offices, bad coffee, worse decisions, and people who are good at their jobs despite being told they are failures. Season 6 keeps that anti-glamour, even as the body count rises, which is why it feels different from every other spy show.
Folding two books also solved a practical problem. The show had caught up with Herron's published novels, and doubling up lets it reach the end of the book series faster, while still giving each story room. It is a bold adaptation choice, but it worked, because Chiappe and Randall kept the character beats, even when the plot moved at double speed.
Seasons 7 and 8 are already locked in
Apple has already confirmed a seventh season, announced last year, and on September 15, 2026 it announced a six-episode eighth season adapted from Herron's novel Clown Town. Season 7 is expected in fall 2027, according to production coverage, with Season 8 already in production in London and Oxford.
That pipeline is remarkable for a show about misfit spies, and it shows Apple's faith in the series. All six seasons stream on Apple TV, which costs $14.99 per month with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers, according to Apple-linked guides. That price may change, so check before you subscribe, but the full run is there now.
The first teaser for Season 7 arrived with the Season 6 finale, which is a classic Apple move, rewarding finishers with a first look at what comes next. If you finished Judgment Day and felt bereft, that teaser is your lifeline. If you have not finished yet, avoid it, because it spoils the direction of travel, even if it does not spoil the details.
How to catch up, and where to start
Start with Season 1 if you are new, because Slow Horses builds its jokes and betrayals across seasons. Each season is short, six episodes, so a full rewatch is a weekend's work, not a month's. Watch for Lamb's one-liners, but also for River's growth, from reckless grandson to a spy who finally understands his grandfather's world.
If you are returning, rewatch Season 5's finale, then Season 6, because the two-book structure rewards a fresh memory of where everyone stood. Then mark fall 2027 for Season 7, and enjoy the wait, because Slow Horses has never rushed, even when its characters are running for their lives.
