The herd is back after ten years away
You have not seen Manny, Sid, and Diego on the big screen since 2016. That is a long time in family film years. Kids who saw Collision Course are teens now. Parents who took them then may now take younger kids. Ice Age Boiling Point is built for both groups. It brings back the voices you know, and it gives them a new place to get into trouble. 20th Century Studios has dated the film for February 5, 2027 in the United States. John C. Donkin directs. Lori Forte and Patrick Worlock produce. Donkin directed The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, so he knows the herd and the Lost World. Forte has produced Ice Age films for years. That continuity should keep the humor and the heart in the right place. Ray Romano returns as Manny, the woolly mammoth and leader of the herd. John Leguizamo returns as Sid, the sloth who causes most of the trouble. Denis Leary returns as Diego, the saber toothed tiger. Queen Latifah returns as Ellie, Manny's wife. Simon Pegg returns as Buck Wild, the one eyed weasel and dinosaur hunter. That core five is the heart of the series. If you hear those voices, you know you are back with the herd.
A volcano changes everything
The official synopsis is short and fun. Ice Age Boiling Point is a dinosaur and lava filled madcap adventure that takes Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, Scrat, and the rest of the herd to visit never before seen corners of the treacherous Lost World. The teaser trailer shows how they get there. A massive volcanic eruption blasts the herd out of the ice and into a fiery new world. That shift is smart. The first Ice Age films lived in ice, snow, and cold. The Lost World, first seen in Dawn of the Dinosaurs, gave the series dinosaurs and jungle. Boiling Point pushes that further. Now you get lava, volcanoes, and heat, jungle plus lava and volcanoes. The herd has to survive in a place that is hot, unstable, and full of creatures that want to eat them. Scrat is back too, with Baby Scrat joining him. The teaser opens with Scrat and Baby Scrat escaping a volcanic eruption, chasing an acorn as usual. That gag has run for over twenty years, and it still works because it is simple. A squirrel wants a nut. The world keeps getting in the way. In Boiling Point, the world is literally exploding around him. That is a perfect Scrat setup. Crash and Eddie, the possum brothers, also appear in the teaser, despite earlier talk that they might not return. Seann William Scott, who voiced Crash, said in an interview in 2025 that he did not expect Crash to appear. The teaser proved otherwise. Both possums are in the footage, causing chaos as usual. That is good news for fans who love their double act.
Why this film took so long
Ice Age began in 2002. It ran through five main films, plus spin offs and TV specials. Collision Course in 2016 was the fifth main film. After that, Blue Sky Studios, the studio behind Ice Age, closed in April 2021. That closure left the franchise in limbo. Disney, which owned the series after buying Fox, had to find a new home for it. 20th Century Animation now produces the film, with 20th Century Studios distributing. That makes Boiling Point the first theatrical Ice Age film not made by Blue Sky. That change could worry fans. Blue Sky gave Ice Age its look and its humor. But the returning cast, the returning producer, and a director from the Buck Wild spin off should keep the feel close to the original. The teaser look, bright, fast, and colorful, suggests the new team kept the spirit intact. The film was first announced in November 2024 at D23 Brazil, with the main cast confirmed. The title was announced in August 2025 at Destination D23. The teaser trailer arrived on June 4, 2026. CinemaCon 2026 gave the film a big push, with Romano, Leary, and Latifah on stage to talk about it. That slow build, from announcement to teaser to CinemaCon, shows Disney is treating this as a real return, not a quick cash in.
What to watch for on February 5
Watch Scrat and Baby Scrat. Their scenes often steal the film, even though they have no dialogue. Watch Buck as well. Pegg's Buck is a fan favorite because he is fearless and a little mad. In a lava filled Lost World, Buck should shine. Watch the new corners of the Lost World too. If the design team invents fresh dinosaurs and fresh dangers, the film will feel new, fresh. For now, mark February 5, 2027. Ice Age Boiling Point is a theatrical release, with no streaming date announced yet. If you grew up with the herd, this is a reunion. If you have kids now, this is a first trip to the ice age, or rather, to the boiling point. Either way, bring the family, expect noise, and expect Scrat to lose his acorn again. Some things never change, and that is part of the fun.
