The kids take the spotlight
Pixar said it plainly at D23 in August 2026. In Incredibles 3, it is the kids' turn to take the spotlight. That line from chief creative officer Pete Docter sets the whole film. Violet and Dash want to prove they are ready to be real Supers. Bob and Helen are not so sure. That clash drives the story.
Violet can turn invisible and make force fields. Dash can run at super speed. Jack-Jack has many powers and little control. In the first two films, the parents led the action. Bob led the first film. Helen led the second. The third film flips that. Violet and Dash sneak out at night to protect the city. They hide it from their parents. It does not go over well at home. That setup is funny, tense, and very family. Teens who want freedom will get it. Parents who worry will get it too.
The film does not use a time jump. Brad Bird confirmed Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack stay at the same general ages as in Incredibles 2. That choice matters. A time jump would age the kids into new actors and new problems. Keeping their ages keeps the family dynamic intact. Violet is still a teen finding confidence. Dash is still a kid with speed and energy. Jack-Jack is still a baby with powers nobody fully understands.
A new director, the same writer
Peter Sohn directs Incredibles 3. Sohn directed The Good Dinosaur and Elemental for Pixar. Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the first two films, wrote the screenplay for the third and serves as executive producer. Bird stepped back from directing to focus on another project, Ray Gunn at Skydance Animation. That change worried some fans. Bird created the Parr family. His voice shaped the first two films.
Sohn's Elemental showed he can handle family emotion at scale, and Bird's script keeps the story in his world.
Voice recording started in March 2026, according to Holly Hunter. She revealed that schedule in an interview. That early start is normal for animation. Voices come first. Animators then build scenes around the performances. By D23 in August 2026, Pixar could show concept art and a title card. The concept art shows Bob holding off a giant sphere, with the family in action. It is early art, not finished footage. Still, it gave fans a first look at the tone. Big, bright, and physical.
The cast returns
Craig T. Nelson returns as Bob Parr, also known as Mr. Incredible. Holly Hunter returns as Helen Parr, also known as Elastigirl. Sarah Vowell returns as Violet. Huck Milner returns as Dash. Samuel L. Jackson returns as Frozone. That core cast is confirmed in D23 coverage. Brad Bird is also expected back as Edna Mode, the fashion designer who makes super suits. Edna stopped Docter from spoiling the villain at D23, in a staged bit that got laughs. That moment alone told fans Edna is back in spirit, if not yet in a full cast list.
Other Incredibles 2 voices may return, but the confirmed list is the Parr family plus Frozone.
The villain is still a mystery. Docter teased a super villain with more power than the whole family put together, and all the other Supers too. Then Edna cut him off. That tease is deliberate. Pixar wants fans to guess for two years. A villain stronger than the family raises the stakes. It also forces the family to work together. Violet and Dash cannot win alone. Bob and Helen cannot win without the kids. That is the point of a family film. Everyone has a role.
Where the story starts
Incredibles 2 ended with Supers legal again. Winston Deavor, a businessman, helped restore their status. Incredibles 3 picks up in that world. Supers can work in public. A sponsored superhero league is part of the new setup, according to D23 reports. That league gives Violet and Dash a goal. They want in. Their parents want them safe. The league also gives the villain a stage. A public league is easy to attack.
That world is different from the first two films. In the first film, Supers were banned. Bob hid his powers and worked in insurance. In the second film, Helen worked to restore Supers' legal status while Bob stayed home with the kids. In the third film, Supers are legal, but the family still argues about who should do what. That is a smart move. It keeps the family conflict fresh without repeating the ban plot.
The release date is June 16, 2028. Disney confirmed that date at its 2026 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, and again at D23. June is a strong slot for Pixar. Families are out of school. Summer box office is open. Incredibles 2 opened in June 2018 and earned over 1.2 billion dollars worldwide. The third film will aim for a similar summer run, ten years after the second film.
For now, the wait is long. Two years is a lot of time for a film with only concept art out. But the pieces are in place. The script is Bird's. The director is Sohn. The cast is back. The kids lead. If Pixar keeps that focus, Incredibles 3 could be the most emotional film in the series. A family that learns to trust its kids is a story every family knows.
