A game you played becomes a film you can walk into

You have probably played a Zelda game. You have explored Hyrule, solved puzzles, fought monsters, and searched for a princess. Now Nintendo wants you to see that world on a big screen, with real actors, real places, and a real sword. The Legend of Zelda movie is the next big test for game adaptations, after the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the mixed history of other game films. Sony Pictures Releasing has the film scheduled for worldwide release on April 30, 2027, according to the latest film listing. That date moved during production. The film was first set for March 26, 2027, then for May 7, 2027, before landing on April 30, 2027 in the latest listing. Treat April 30 as the current scheduled date, and check listings closer to release, because game films move dates often. Still, the April 30 slot puts Zelda in a strong spring window, before the summer blockbuster rush. Wes Ball directs, from a screenplay by T. S. Nowlin. Ball directed The Maze Runner films and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Nowlin worked with Ball on Maze Runner. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Zelda, produces with Avi Arad, Ball, and Joe Hartwick Jr. Miyamoto has said he worked on a Zelda film for many years with Arad. That long development shows in the care around casting and filming. Nintendo is not rushing this one.

Link and Zelda are young, fresh faces

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays Link. Bo Bragason plays Princess Zelda. Miyamoto announced both castings himself on Nintendo's official account in July 2025. That announcement mattered. It told fans Nintendo chose the leads, Nintendo itself. It also told fans the leads would be young and relatively fresh, not huge stars. Ainsworth is a young English actor who voiced Pinocchio in Disney's 2022 live action film and played Miles in The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix. He also appeared in Everything's Going to Be Great with Bryan Cranston. Bragason is a young English actress who appeared in BBC dramas Three Girls and The Jetty, and in Disney Plus series Renegade Nell. She also appeared in The Hunger Games The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, according to some coverage. That youth fits Link and Zelda. In most games, Link is a young hero, brave but quiet. Zelda is a young princess, wise beyond her years, with magic and duty on her shoulders. Older stars might have felt wrong. Young actors can grow into these roles, and fans can grow with them if Nintendo makes more films. First look photos, released by Nintendo on November 17, 2025, show Ainsworth as Link and Bragason as Zelda standing in a green field. The photos look simple and grounded. No huge CGI city, no wild costume. Just two young people in a landscape that could be Hyrule. That restraint is promising. It suggests Ball wants Hyrule to feel like a real place, a real place you could walk in.

Ganondorf, Impa, and the rest of Hyrule

Uli Latukefu plays Ganondorf, the villain, according to Deadline reports in August 2026. Dichen Lachman plays Impa, Zelda's protector and guide, also confirmed in August 2026. Yvonne Strahovski, Lydia Peckham, and Sam Neill also join the cast in undisclosed or supporting roles. Neill's role is listed as one of his final film appearances, after his death in July 2026, according to film listings. That note adds sadness to the film's release, and respect for Neill's long career. Ganondorf is key. In the games, he is a powerful warlock who wants the Triforce, a sacred relic that grants power. He can be a brute, a king, or a shadow, depending on the game. Latukefu needs to make him feel dangerous without turning him into a generic villain. Impa is also key. She is Zelda's guardian, a warrior and a sage. Lachman, known for Severance and other genre work, should bring steel and calm to that role. The film has no subtitle, by design. Miyamoto said at a Nintendo Direct for the 40th anniversary of Zelda that the lack of a subtitle is intentional, and audiences will understand why when they see the film. That hint has sparked fan theories. Is it an original story? Is it based on one game, or a mix? For now, treat those theories as fan talk. Nintendo has not confirmed a specific game as the source, beyond the series itself, created by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka in 1986.

What to watch for on April 30

Watch Ainsworth as Link first. Does he carry a film with few lines, using face, movement, and action? Watch Bragason as Zelda next. Does she feel like a princess with power, a princess with real power? Watch Latukefu as Ganondorf too. Does he scare you without shouting every line? Watch Hyrule most of all. Does it feel like a place you could walk in, with villages, forests, and temples? Or does it feel like a green screen? The New Zealand shoot suggests real places will help. The first photos suggest a grounded look. If Ball keeps that grounding, Zelda could feel like a real adventure, a real adventure. For now, mark April 30, 2027, and note the earlier May 7 date in older coverage, so you do not get confused by old articles. The Legend of Zelda is a theatrical release, with no streaming date announced yet. If you grew up with Zelda, this is the film you dreamed about as a kid. If you never played the games, this is a fantasy adventure about a young hero, a wise princess, and a dark king. Bring your curiosity, and leave room for wonder. Hyrule is coming to cinemas.
